Architects and Developers

Title

Description

Developer's Guide

Explains how to create asset types, design pages, set up security, establish caching and web services, and much more.

Since the previous release, the following changes have been made to the guide to reflect changes to the Content Server product. Detailed information regarding the changes is given at the beginning of the Developer’s Guide:

Page Caching

·         A new chapter was added—Chapter 6, “ Advanced Page Caching Techniques.” This chapter describes how pages and blobs are cached, where they are cached, and how they are retrieved from cache on both Content Server and Satellite Server systems.

·         Removed:

-        The FileServer servlet. Users who need FileServer must use Satellite Server 5.5 or an earlier version.

-        satellite.tag

·         Renamed:

-        The cacheinfo column (in the SiteCatalog table) was renamed to: cscacheinfo

-        The cs.pageCacheTimeout property was renamed to: cs.pgCacheTimeout

-        The satellite.ini file was renamed to satellite.properties and moved into the web application.

·         Added:

-        sscacheinfo column

-        cron-like TimePattern expiration for cscacheinfo and sscacheinfo

·         Enhanced:

-        TimePattern syntax for both the cscacheinfo and sscacheinfo columns.

-        Support for XML-based pages.

·         Users of this guide also need to be aware of the following methods: ics.disableFragmentCache() and ics.disableCache() for disabling caching on pages within the page invocation instance.

Topics Related to Page Caching

Creation of SiteEntry assets. The current interface and procedures for creating SiteEntry assets are based on the new page caching functionality and are provided in chapter 20.

References to Transact and Commerce Connector

Because Transact is no longer part of the Content Server product suite, the following references to Transact and its supporting Commerce Connector product were removed from this guide: “Visitor Management and Commerce Connector” section, “About Commerce and Access IDs” section, “About the Transact Visitor Data” section; the “Commerce Integration” chapter; and references to the tag libraries csmac.tld and csuser.tld.

Other Changes

·         Chapter 1, “Overview” was supplemented with detailed descriptions of the Content Server product, its add-on offerings, and client applications that provide users with alternative interfaces to the standard CS interface. Descriptions and comparisons of the basic asset and flex asset families have also been amplified.

·         Chapter 9, previously “The Content Server Site,” was renamed to “Content Management Sites” and moved to chapter 3 in this guide.

·         Instances of “Content Server site” were renamed to “content management site” or simply “site” (i.e., the back end of the online site).

·         The following appendixes were added:

-        “Creating a Hierarchical Flex family” provides a tutorial on a how to create a flex family and how each member of the family functions.

-        “URL Assemblers” explains how you can define the appearance of URLs.

-        “White Space and Compression” shows you how to eliminate white space in text pages that are streamed to client browsers, and therefore how to optimize the size of a response and the use of bandwidth.
